Great insight over a Lunch

I happened to meet one of the senior most Industry peer of mine couple of months back. He had served in army for long and now is heading a department in one of the Big Indian Multinationals.
We were generally chatting over lunch when we struck upon his favourite past time. He learns one new hobby every year. He will learn and set a target for himself to judge his learning which he achieves by the year end. He may not be sure of continuing the same hobby later in life but targets a new initiative every year. He has learnt different languages, cooking, photography, sudoku, the toughest cryptic puzzles which appears in ( UK ) English dailies, etc etc
Couple of interesting facts he revealed about himself. Though 30 years in army, he never got bored of his postings across the country or abroad. However godforsaken place it could have been, he never got addicted to T V. This was mainly due to his hobby.
Once he was representing India in UN Peace Keeping Force Regiment. He was posted at an outpost in a bad weather, under heavy snow and had to stay inside the bunker with no replenishment for 3 months. He was accompanied by another Serbian army commander, just two of them. However, that guy did not speak English. Hence they communicated in sign language amongst them. This was when he saw a pile of English Tabloids left behind by the earlier guy and he took to solving the Cryptic puzzles in it. And he ended up solving all of them and mastered it.

It was a great lunch with a lot of Food for thought for myself.

  2. I think that is what you call self-discipline, restricting oneself on certain matters and living happily at the same time when others think they cannot live without it.
Thank you so much for sharing this experience, kaka.
